As Prejean writes in “Dead Man Walking,” first published twenty-five years ago, she is repulsed by his actions, but through their steady correspondence she cannot help but also think of him as a fellow human being. Sonnier was sentenced to death for the crime his brother received a life sentence. In January of 1982, Sister Helen Prejean became a pen pal to Elmo Patrick Sonnier, a death-row inmate who had been convicted, with his brother, of abducting a teen-age couple from a lover’s lane, raping the woman, and shooting her and her partner in the back of the head. ![]()
